1 – Find time

If you tell yourself you're going to start reading a book when you have time, well, you never will. There are more urgent things – like a dish to wash, some messages you need to respond to, or pets wanting attention – that will always be prioritized compared to reading.

So, set aside time to read, like half an hour before going to bed, half an hour after waking up, on the way to work… Think about your routine, fit in reading and, little by little, you will be able to understand best times in your life to read.

2 - What genre?

Many people who read the classics of Spanish literature, around 13, 14 or 15 years old, associate reading with a dense, boring, boring activity. But not quite. There are a multitude of books and literary genres, so you just need to find the ideal one for you.

If you want to read fiction, that is, stories created by an author, you can choose Spanish or foreign books, classics or with more modern language, long or short… , diversity is what is not lacking.

3 – Don’t be pushy

Sometimes we don't realize, after 30 minutes of watching a movie, that we didn't make a good choice, that the movie is bad. But as there's only one hour left to finish, we're done anyway. Well, finishing a book takes a lot more time, so insisting is not the best solution.

If reading is bad, stuck, tiring or boring, stop. Change book. If you insist, your brain will associate reading with something negative. As you read more and more, you will learn, by reading just one paragraph, to identify whether that book might please you or not.

4 – Keep the book close by

How many times have you been to a doctor's appointment scheduled for 9 am, but that didn't start until half an hour later? In these moments, having a book at hand is the best thing: time passes faster, and we still advance in reading.

In our busy daily lives, we often take the time to read, but it turns out that obligations overlap with leisure, and we end up not reading... So take the book wherever you go, because you never know when the opportunity to read a few pages arises, even let them be little.

5 – How about setting goals?

If you really want to turn reading into a habit, how about setting goals? You can set, for example, 20 pages a day, or a book every two weeks, or 25 books a year… Only you will be able to set that goal based on how much you read.

But also be careful not to transform this activity, which is leisure, study and rest, into another obligation or responsibility, because the goal that should serve to encourage you can end up turning into a goal that will end up not being fulfilled, causing anxiety.

6 – Exchange with other readers

Just like running or going to the gym with other people can encourage you into the habit, reading can be more fun if you exchange it with other people. Yes, reading is a solitary activity, in the sense that when we read, we read alone. But, outside the pages, it doesn't have to be.

A good idea is book clubs, for example, which hold weekly, biweekly or monthly meetings to discuss a work. Or you can exchange suggestions and referrals with a friend in particular. Anyway, it can be much more enjoyable to read “accompanied”.
