Cinnamon and Cardamom for Winter Days

Cinnamon and Cardamom for Winter Days

Winter puts us in touch with strong yin (feminine) energy. It asks us to collect, introspection and isolation. Unconsciously, we seek our “caves” more, we talk and relate less, we dress more, we seek warmer and more caloric foods.

But, unlike what happens in nature, we cannot hibernate during the cold season. It is necessary to follow the grueling routine even if the body cries out for more hours of sleep. Thus, the sorrows of winter arise, as energy is denser and governed by the water element that acts on our emotions.

Infections, inflammation and pain in the body also appear, signs that the internal nature is not being respected. There is a natural fall of the fire element, responsible for the energy of joy and enthusiasm.

Laziness dominates our routine and causes a deficit in our earth element, which brings us the strength of accomplishment. In winter, the fire and earth elements are in natural fall, while water, natural abundance. The result of this imbalance is melancholy, hurt, discouragement and inattention.

Food can (and should) be used to help rebalance energy during this period. Spices and their “magical” functions are our great allies during winter days, especially cinnamon, a source of the fire element, and cardamom, rich in the earth element.

The two together are the perfect combination to light our internal fire and anchor our feet to the floor, that sudden urge to jump out of bed before the alarm clock goes off. It is exactly this energy that works this spice duo. Collection and introspection are indeed necessary in winter, even so that our energy, plans and emotions are transformed and can germinate strengthened in spring.
