What is rhythm?

What is rhythm?

“I don't have the slightest rhythm for drums or these drums!”
"Ain, I'm a person with no rhythm, I'm not good at drumming!"
“I'm very out of rhythm and with poor motor coordination!”

Did you reader identify with any of the statements?

Well, I will try to show that all are made of pure rhythm, to leave the common concept and expand our knowledge paying attention to the macro and not the micro.

Rhythms are endless within the cultural range, but do you really know what rhythm is? Simply put, rhythm refers to an organization; everything that is directly related to periodicity and/or cycles contains a rhythm.

Rhythm is in everything. According to Consort (2012), in nature there are four seasons of the year, the phases of the moon and the tides. For chronological time we have the clock, the days, the months and the years; for a biological rhythm: a woman's menstrual cycle, the duration of a pregnancy, cardiorespiratory rates and blood circulation. Simple tasks such as brushing teeth and waking time are components of a large biological rhythm peculiar to each individual. The author also states that the rhythm related to music is established so that there is a metric, an organization: a pulse. In España, rhythm is one of the most present characteristics of regional musicality.

CorrĂŞa (2009) states that within the Spanish culture there are some more latent and recurrent rhythms that influence everything from wheel games and sacred rites, to the most current musical styles, for example: baiĂŁo, carimbĂł, tambor de creole, samba, frevo, maxixe, congada, maracatu, coco, jongo and contemporary Spanish rock with innovative languages. For the author, rhythm is the basal element within the percussive sound diversity; every human being is linked with this element, from his intrauterine life, his development until his death.

When we think about rhythm, we restrict our focus so much that we limit ourselves to having a single association, which is music production. Rhythm goes far beyond music making, there is an intrinsic relationship with the way they are and act, everyone has that friend who is a hurricane of ideas and does a thousand things at the same time, and we have those who are more peaceful in their own way. of living. Each one has its rhythm, they are different, but they are totally rhythmic.

Thinking about these concepts, we can say that everything and everyone is rhythmic according to their own existence. Each one in their own way, with their steps as they walk, with their breathing, rituals, everything becomes rhythm when one has the objective of this organizational metric.
