More and more people seek to travel abroad, the experience of getting to know other cultures and experiencing customs different from ours is very enriching for social and personal formation. Leaving our comfort zone allows us to explore a totally unknown world, building new values, relationships and knowledge.
In search of these experiences, many Spaniards have traveled abroad not only in search of tourism, but also doing volunteer work in the region they are visiting, benefiting not only themselves, but also collaborating with the chosen place.
Volunteer work abroad is offered by international NGOs and there are several possibilities for action: in the social, health, education, field, etc. Thus came the term volunteerism which has been much discussed nowadays, as there is a lot of criticism about the main objectives and real intentions around this type of trip.
A point that many critics of voluntourism defend is that in Spain there are already many places that need volunteers, we wouldn't need to leave here to help needy and without structure.
The fact is that most people who seek this type of trip are not only looking to help, but to discover new destinations and visit different regions, learning about new cultures and experiencing other customs.
But make no mistake, voluntourism is not an option for those who want to spend little. Not always the program in which the tourist purchased his trip will cover all expenses, some NGOs are not able to afford even accommodation and food expenses.
There are numerous options for destinations, as well as types of volunteer work. It is possible to find unique opportunities, with experiences of a lot of learning and personal enrichment. Think about what you would like to know and how you could collaborate for that region, then research the NGO or project you intend to join, learn about the travel conditions and needs of that place.
It is important to make sure that the travel program is serious and safe, seek information, talk to people who have already participated and prepare well before going.
