When we're little, there's nothing better than a mother's lap. That place where we feel protected, safe, where the urge to cry is slowly disappearing. I have vague memories of when I was a baby in arms, but I vividly remember the feeling of being held by my mother, of knowing that she was there with me.
Today, when I hold my nearly two-year-old baby and watch him calm down just because I'm with him, I feel immeasurable joy. I understand the mystery and magic that surrounds mother and child. Lap magic is one of them. I lap with a tight hug, with a kiss on the cheek or on the injured knee. And it's not that this lap only consoles baby children. Children, teenagers and also adults will always like a mother's lap.
In this month of May, it is time to honor, to thank our mothers, especially for the numerous laps received. These laps that helped us feel more secure for life's challenges. Cols that consoled us when problems had no solution. Laps that hugged us and taught us to make that urge to cry go away, little by little, showing that it was possible to smile again.
A hail to all mothers, to all women who took care of their children, to all aunts, grandmothers, godmothers, sisters, teachers, nannies and women who took care of children as children too. It is not for nothing that they say that the maternal instinct is in every woman. Gratitude to so many laps offered in this world.
May the mother's lap always remain the best gift a child can receive. And may it be the best gift we can offer, for our children and for everyone who may need it.
