Lilith: who is this controversial woman?

There are several legends about Lilith, but many say that she was Adam's first wife (before Eve) and would have been excluded from the Bible, for having rebelled against her husband's machismo and then left. As with all myth or speculation, there is a lot of information about this Sumerian-Babylonian goddess and, in several cultures, she became a feminist symbol who rebelled against all patriarchal norms. Understand more about her!

Lilith, Adam and Eve

Several myths created during the Middle Ages claim that this goddess was the first woman created by God from the earth. As stated earlier, after refusing to submit to Adam, Lilith would have used God's name in vain and then abandoned the Garden of Eden. After leaving Paradise, God would have sent three angels to convince her to return to Eden and return to being Adam's companion, but Lilith did not want to. For that reason, she became a demon. From these events, God would have created Eve, not to let Adam be sad and alone. Eve, in turn, was created from Adam's rib and was totally submissive to her husband.

Some stories that permeate this myth even claim that the serpent that convinced Eve to eat the only forbidden fruit in Paradise was Lilith. The reason for this would be jealousy and the desire to destroy Adam and Eve.

Lilith ea BĂblia

There is nothing about Lilith in the Bible and nothing to suggest that her story is true. In the book of Genesis, the creation narrative talks only about one woman and one man: Eve and Adam. There is a possible allusion to Lilith in Isaiah 34:14, in which a Hebrew word that has the translation of "creatures of the night" tends to look a bit like her. This creature mentioned in this book represents a being that would haunt a land called Edom after its destruction. All the creatures present in these passages symbolize the desolation of this land. As the narrative is symbolic, we cannot say that this creature really existed or if it is just a metaphor. It is worth noting that this possible reference to Lilith in the Bible (in the book of Isaiah) was written before the myths about the woman who would have been created before Adam came along.

The Lilith myth does not add anything to the Bible, in fact, it is totally contradictory to it. The Holy Bible is very clear: the serpent that tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit was the devil (Revelation 12:9).

Lilith and other cultures

In Babylonian mythology, Lilith was considered a demon who had the body of a woman and who inhabited Hell. There is a reference in Kabbalah about her, in which she is said to be the first wife of Adam (as mentioned earlier). Already in Mesopotamian mythology, Lilith was linked to the figure of a demon of the night who was a woman. In Mesopotamian culture, she represented the wind and, for this reason, her image was related to malaise, pestilence and death. In Hebrew mythology, with major citations in the Talmud and Midrash, Lilith was also related to a demon.

In the middle of 3000 a. C., Lilith was called Lilitu by the Sumerians. At that time, her figure appeared in the representation of a band of demons or spirits that were related to the winds and storms. Like the Sumerians, Babylonian society also related Lilith with demons and evil spirits. But the people of Babylon used the Moon as the symbol of Lilith, thus believing that this female demon had variations between good and bad phases. Lilith was related to demons until the XNUMXth century!

In the contemporary period, another interpretation of the figure of Lilith emerged, who completely abandons the title of female devil who practices evil and becomes for the romantics on duty a great symbol of seduction and sensuality. This image transformation took place among several intellectual Europeans, who paid homage to Lilith in great works, such as, in 1902, in John Collier's painting, in which a creature portrays a sensual woman surrounded by a serpent. From then on, she stopped being associated with bad things.

Some ancient people said that owl cries meant that Lilith was nearby. In fact, one of the names given to her was “Cry of the Owl”, as it is a symbol of women's clamor and desire for equality. Among the Catholic people, the image of Liliith became popular from the moment when the studies of demonology grew, in the XNUMXth century. The representation of some studies relate it to nocturnal birds and also to Greek mermaids. It is exactly at this point that the “witch” and “mother of vampires” myths were born.

From demon to goddess

Many consider Lilith to be one of the most "sinister" female entities. She was once held to be a demon responsible for miscarriages and carelessness during pregnancy and that is why many consider her a clarification for the premature death of babies, but know that her representation as a female demon goes much deeper.

With the passage of time, Lilith's demon turned into a goddess! She came to be identified as a great power of female independence, leaving behind all the demonization of her image.

In the last century, several stories emerged that romanticized and illustrated Lilith's struggle against the predominant power of man (more precisely against the submission imposed by Adam and God), as a way to empower the figure of the woman in Judeo-Christian mythology. And it is in this period that the nomination “goddess” arrived!

In the 1960s, with the great influence of several feminist movements, many women in Jewish society began to raise questions about Lilith. From this revisionism, she began to be seen as a female symbol of struggle against all machismo and patriarchy and, therefore, her image of revolt against this social order of men was established. With this, the neopagans assimilated this version and began to worship Lilith as a goddess.
