Learn what antibiotics can do to your gut

Did you know that using some antibiotics can be bad for your gut health? A study published this year found that the use of some common drugs can disrupt beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Does that mean you shouldn't take antibiotics anymore? No! The problem is that not everyone uses medications judiciously. It is important to use only the medicine prescribed by the specialist, for the right time, because only then will some infections be treated.

Some Swedish and British researchers have looked at what happens in the gut when receiving the antibiotic. The study was performed by means of stool and saliva exams. After a round of antibiotics, it was found that the use of these drugs eliminates several intestinal bacteria responsible for the production of butyrate, a fatty acid that works as an antioxidant that inhibits inflammation and helps fight cancer.

The study tested four antibiotics commonly prescribed by doctors:
  • Ciprofloxacin – known as cipro, this medication is indicated for urinary infections.

Class: Quinolona fluorine.

  • Amoxicillin – used to fight various diseases in the urinary tract, gonorrhea, infections in the ears, throat, bronchitis and skin problems.

Class: similar to penicillin

  • Minocycline – indicated most of the time for respiratory, dermatological problems such as acnes, in addition to fighting urinary and genital infections.

  • Clindamycin – used to treat vaginal infections, lung and skin problems.

Class: Lincomycin

Among the remedies mentioned above, amoxicillin harms the intestine for about a week. Monocycline destroys beneficial bacteria for a month. The other two drugs are extremely harmful, as they kill bacteria more aggressively for up to a year.
