Many workers left their jobs in 1917 and took to the streets to protest against the First World War and the famine that affected their families at the time. This manifestation took place on February 23, in the old Russian calendar – March 8 in the Gregorian calendar.

The date was made official at the end of the Bolshevik revolution as the commemoration of the “working and heroic woman”.
