Community gardens in urban areas have expanded in recent years, the need to increase green in large cities that have lost much of this color to the gray of buildings and asphalt. The idea of community gardens comes from measures and movements of city dwellers and small farmers. The main idea is to build a place where you can plant and harvest, and that serves the community installed there.

Various products are grown in these places, such as vegetables, fruits such as banana, strawberry, spices, and even flowers. Because it is a medium-sized place, it is often possible to grow organically, that is, without the use of pesticides and other conventional means.
The cultivation and care of the gardens is done through voluntary work, where the people who are willing and in agreement with the project take care of and vitalize the gardens. Access is free, and plants and others can be removed as long as a part of them is kept, it is not allowed to take a whole plant home.
There are communities on social networks such as Hortelões Urbanos, which promote the idea and support the gardens. A well-known vegetable garden in the city of São Paulo is called “Owl Gardens” where organic food is grown. Another project is fromCity Without Hunger” which has several vegetable gardens throughout the large city of São Paulo, and also teaches the vegetable garden project in public schools in the city, a measure that aims to teach children about planting, sustainability and the importance of the environment and the relationship with nature.
