Pathogenesis vs Salutogenesis

We are part of a society with troubled principles, in which people feel apprehensive; feelings of distress, anxiety and fear are the dominant emotions. People bother me, things don't go my way, I don't accept this situation, all this disturbs me, afflicts me and makes me sick.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) – 1998, “Health is a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Disease can be defined as a set of specific signs and symptoms that affect a living being, altering its normal state of health.

Someone do something, I need help, the solution must be immediate, after all, I don't want to suffer, we are intolerant of our body, we don't accept the disease, we don't understand why we get sick, we want to be well, healthy and we find relief in pharmacies for each symptom. We take medicines without medical prescription, other times, unfortunately, with unnecessary prescription, for acting according to the current medical model, the pathogenic.

The pathogenesis privileges the disease; it focuses only on its causal agents, on the way in which the agents act in our organism producing diseases, they study human illness and how to avoid them. As we have seen, disease can be defined as a set of signs (that which is visible, perceptible) and symptoms (what we feel, not visible, not perceptible).

Pathogenesis vs Salutogenesis

As a homeopathic doctor, I understand that every mental or organic symptom has an origin, a motive, a meaning, which manifests itself in the physical, emotional, mental sphere. Every symptom stems from conscious or unconscious suffering that must be elucidated and not suppressed, “silent”, with the use of medications, which, although important, should be prescribed only when necessary and well indicated.

Contrasting this model of Pathogenesis, we have the Salutogenesis, a term coined by Aaron Antonovsky (a sociologist and physician) who, after studying the drama of human beings subjected to extreme situations (survivors of a Nazi concentration camp after World War II), realized that people with some spiritual baggage – whatever regardless of their religious tradition – they have a greater capacity for self-control, serenity and even immunological balance in the face of stressful situations.

Pathogenesis vs Salutogenesis

This concept represented a paradigm shift in the health sciences, which until then had only sought an explanation for why someone was sick (pathogenesis). This focus on health, on balance as an existential condition is possible, it is called Salutogenesis.

Salutogenesis brings an approach contrary to that of Pathogenesis: it questions why do we get sick e how are we going to treat the disease. It addresses how we should do to keep ourselves healthy and in balance, even in the face of the struggles of existence, how to maintain conscious harmony in the face of life's challenges.

Antonovsky proposes as the center of the salutogenic possibility of the individual the sense of coherence, which is the way in which the individual finds the possibility of solving their existential challenges in a satisfactory and healthy way.
