Know how to respect your physical and emotional limits in the practice of yoga

There are two types of pain that you can identify when practicing yoga: the first is a pain that we can call positive, in which you feel the stretching of the muscles and their structures without discomfort. The second, which would be negative, is what you feel in your joints when you push the intensity too hard. Joints, tendons and ligaments should be given extra attention, especially since stretching is not carried out in these regions. The function of tendons is to connect the ends of muscles to bones, and that of ligaments is to connect bones to each other. That is why it is necessary to seek a correct alignment of postures, even if adapted, to be aware of our movements and limits.

The concept of alignment involves the notion of the sagittal and frontal planes, that is, the division into the right and left hemispheres, and the anterior and posterior. It means opening up and creating space in the whole organism, enabling you to become the asana (posture) instead of just doing the asana. This alignment, in a subtle and personal way, works to open paths for the energy to ascend. Then, you will begin to perceive your body in connection with your mind and spirit.

Stretching in yoga is different from physical exercise., for this expanding of space in your body is accompanied by an awareness of the activation of subtle body energy, a process that can occur in both static and active stretching. The static is performed passively, while staying in each asana. The active one involves the movement of muscle groups in the fluidity of the asanas. In both, concentration on your breathing and movement is essential. Slowly enter each pose, following your breathing, and advance gradually. With each exhalation of breath, experience this advance, realizing your limits in the moment.

The practice of yoga will teach you not to be in a hurry, because yoga is not the posture, but the path to the posture. It is the discovery of your body, in the way you breathe, in your limits and patterns. The rush to get out of one posture and go straight to the other shows our anxiety and reveals what you can work on to balance your emotions. This is where what we call self-knowledge comes in. He is in the smallest details of a yoga practice.
