Invisibility cloak

    Invisibility cloak

Especially, but not exclusively, to women.

We've all tried the invisibility cloak. This cloak may have been forcibly worn on us or we wear it ourselves due to things we hear, see and feel.

This cover in a way is related to our body. A place that was and is socially and historically constructed and shaped.

A silent body, silenced, sculpted and formed by experiences and which often lacks correction.

Stop for a moment and think about what you've heard about your body. You can do this search back in your childhood, when you were most likely suggested to sit with your “legs closed”; a little further on, that you “preserve yourself”, and that meant what kind of clothes should not be worn.

Talking and laughing loudly and gesturing too much are not the types of behavior expected of a “good girl”, that adjective so recurrent when we normally meet the expectations of those around us.

And, thus, we were molding ourselves and behaving following what was dictated to us externally.

This cover that would apparently be to protect us, to keep us away from the desirous eyes on our bodies, to preserve us, in a way also prevents us from existing.

Even today, even in the face of an awakening to many of the issues that cross our bodies, this cover of invisibility has been constantly reinforced by the many aesthetic procedures that are offered to us as solutions to transform ourselves into our “best versions”.

An insidious and violent message that we will be better and happier when we stop being who we are. Unsustainable! We cannot exist in our own bodies.

I leave the invitation to question ourselves about these many impositions that are made to us and that have been happening earlier and earlier, so that, through this, we can break with the idea of a standard body that excludes other ways of being.

I also feel that, when referring to the body, the most appropriate would be the plural use: “bodies”, which encompasses the plurality of existences, a path that allows us to recognize the body as a reliable and comfortable place to be and be, a place where I can truly dwell and from which I can exist.
