I will start by telling the history and origin of Tarot with the information that scholars managed to record throughout the existence of this precious instrument of self-knowledge.

The Tarot is of unknown origin, and there is no certainty as to how it arose or how it was born. There are, yes, many hypotheses about its creation.

Many scholars claim that it spread in Europe, where there are records from the year 1397, but it is not known whether it originated in Egypt, India or another totally different location. In fact, what is known is that this has not yet been proven. The first vestiges are of at least 6 centuries of existence and that is the direct ancestor of our modern playing cards.

It was in Europe, more specifically in Italy, where records of the first manifestations of a 78-card game were identified. Cards that today are known by the name of Tarot.

Around the middle of the 1430th century, not long after the first written references to any form of letter appeared in Europe, an artist named Bonifacio Bembo painted a celebrated set of unnamed and unnumbered letters for the Visconti Sforza family of Milan, which may date from the years 50-XNUMX. This famous game can be considered one of the oldest pieces of Tarot known to us.

It is not possible to say whether the set of 22 trumps or Major Arcana and the 56 cards of the so-called Minor Arcana – with their four suits – were created separately and later combined in a single game or if, from the beginning, the set of seventy-eight cards was created. eight cards.

The Tarot today

Today the so-called and well-known Tarot is a game made up of 78 cards, 56 of which are arranged in 4 series of ten cards, each series followed by 4 figures, divided into 4 suits (Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, Clubs), numbered from 1 to 10 and 4 more Court cards (Page, Knight, Queen and King), which form the Minor Arcana, and 22 more cards called Major Arcana. The latter are inspired by and describe the main forces that govern men, attributing a hierarchical value to them.

The 22 cards, 21 + 1, form the set traditionally called the Major Arcana. Each Major Arcana, except the Fool (in most traditional Tarots), and also in the Tarot represented here in the creation of the Prosperity Tarot images, has a number at the top, in addition to figures that enclose human, animal or material representations in the center. There is also a denomination at the bottom identifying its symbolic interpretation.

The number, taken symbolically, reveals the philosophical principles that allow us to understand the framework of the constitution of the Cosmos with its laws and principles.

The meanings that each number can take are infinite. The comparison of the principle represented by the number with the figure makes it possible to specify the point of view from which it was considered and, on the other hand, provides the bases for the interpretation of the nature of colors, the relative arrangement of objects and the particular meaning that presided over the representation of the color. Letter.
