Compassion and Therapeutic Writing

Compassion can start from this point, which flows with self-care, knowing how to observe and, in addition to perceiving, act towards the good of oneself and the good of others. This action towards good is not just generosity or empathy, it is about going beyond a possible feeling of pity; which is feeling sorry for yourself or someone else. In other words, compassion is action and daily training.

And being inherent to being human, compassion is part of our physiological nature and our sense of living in community. We all have the seed of compassion and we work together as part of human nature.

We know, however, that this interaction – of living in community – requires courage to listen with quality to what is not always said. By listening, we are able to recognize our own responsibility in the face of some event that prevented us from acting with compassion.

The good news is that quality listening is something you learn! By first learning to listen to ourselves, we will be able to listen to the other. Knowing our feelings, we will be able to welcome the other and all that this implies.

Another good news is that we can learn to listen to ourselves by writing, because, through therapeutic writing, we recognize and name the feelings that inhabit us.

The creative and therapeutic writing technique allows us to investigate and understand how we perceive and act in our lives. Through therapeutic writing, we record and create possibilities for our internal dialogue. We build contemplation images to describe how beautiful and blessed life is, as this practice allows us to accept what is, despite the mystery.

In creative and therapeutic writing, there is a harmonious involvement of surrender without renunciation which generates a sense of eternity that is born by everything that can be built, narrated and shared through words.

This exercise-led writing technique leads us to self-knowledge and allows us to say without censorship if we fail, fail, or abandon dreams. It frees us to start over from the understanding of something that is mentioned in literatures and philosophies; there is a lot to learn, to improve and this is called Life.

Creative and therapeutic writing offers us some benefits, among them:

Accepting what we feel is part of accepting the present moment.

Realizing that, by welcoming our emotions, we will not be identifying with them.

Writing broadens our perspective of reality.
