What are mantras?

Much is said about mantras, these phrases chanted over and over and which are extremely powerful. But what do they really represent?

Mantra is a hymn linked to Hinduism and Buddhism and that is said repeatedly, in order to relax and reach the state of meditation in those who are singing or listening to the sound. There are definitions that consider the mantra as an instrument of thought. This short and powerful spiritual formula leads to connection with the Supreme, which can be different things to different people: You may recognize it as Truth, Love, Consciousness, Christ, Allah, Krishna, Shiva, Divine Mother or some other name.

The word Mantra is composed of the syllables MAN, which means mind, and TRA, which means surrender in Sanskrit, an ancient language of India, and means “that which, as an object of meditation, brings liberation”.

What are mantras?

Mantras are written in the Vedas, Indian sacred books first compiled in 3000 BC, and are metrical hymns and praises to the gods, and can be considered a prayer. The hymns gave rise to the mantras that crossed the Brahmanical period and were introduced into Buddhism and later into Tibetan Buddhism.

Written thousands of years ago by gurus and masters from India, mantras can positively influence a person's life, whether in the financial, health or relationships area. Repetition is the key to interrupting the natural process of the mind that takes us from one idea to another without control. When we chant the mantra, we stop this mental flow, bringing our body to total relaxation, when body and mind become still, opening to the subtle vibrations that expand our perception.

What are mantras?

This is because the basic function of a mantra is to calm, focus, silence and purify the mind. When these divine sounds are repeated, consciously or unconsciously, our emotions, thoughts, desires, that is, our whole being, automatically turns to the search for the Divine.

Finally, it is important to note that mantras are a ladder that leads directly to the Supreme Being, to our true realization.
