Rock Militants – Are you one?

The 1980s were full of news on the national scene with regard to the “Rock and Roll” style. It was the birthplace of many bands that were consolidated over the course of other decades and were strongly inspired by the international phonographic market.

Most of the songs brought a strong political engagement and aroused a critical look at the things that happened in the country.

Bands such as Legião Urbana, Capital Inicial, Ultraje a Rigor and many others that inspired and still inspire many young people with their not only political, but existential reflections.

On the other hand, on the international scene we have: Bob Dylan, U2, Midnight Oil, The Police and other younger people who also make the line engaged.

The 1980s in España were marked by immense transformations in the political scenario and even the radios suffered strong censorship even when they played songs that did not even refer to political issues in fact. It was a period of very dramatic actions and reactions.

There was a radio station that until today left “orphans” with so much nostalgia, for its cool and at the same time very engaged attitude: Fluminense FM – Damn! This radio was founded in Rio de Janeiro by a group of friends and was commanded by journalist Luiz Antônio Mello.

As the newspaper O Globo said: “At six o'clock in the morning of March 1, 1982, a radio rebellion called Fluminense FM, eternalized as Maldita, went on the air. That fulminated the norms of the so-called young FMs of the time”.

The history of radio and the national scene can be relived if you read the pages of the book “A Onda Maldita”, written by Luiz Antônio Mello. I recommend the delicious read! Those who lived during that time go to ecstasy and even those who were children like me and saw adults listening to the radio and music are also fascinated by reading. It's like stepping back in time...

I liked the theme “Rock and Politics” so much that it became my TCC (Completion of Course Work) in 2008, at Faculdade Pinheiro Guimarães in Rio de Janeiro (where I lived at the time, although I was born in Santo André).

I believe it is of paramount importance to illustrate to today's youth how we can positively influence our generation. Nobody needs to be a ruler for that. Since even through music this influence can happen!

I ask young people, what are they reading, watching, listening to? Does it bring good information, help transform your reality and that of the world around you? And parents, family members, friends, what have they been doing to make it possible for these people to get out of the bubble, the common place, the tedious sameness of everyday life?

Yesterday's youth are today's adults and so it goes...

That's what I tried to do a little, when addressing this topic in my TCC. I made a radio program called Militantes do Rock! And I had the honor of interviewing Luiz Antonio Mello (from Fluminense FM radio – Maldita), Roger from the band Ultraje a Rigor and we made good reflections about the time and the songs.

To all my wish is: let's make a positive difference, even if it seems small. Cast the light and let it flow… Information flies, one way or another, and it will reach the people who are eager to receive it!

The Militantes do Rock radio program seeks to encourage the new generation of announcers, communication students, bands, etc., to continue an engaged Rock radio project, be it: political, environmental, sociological; intellectual.

As a means of transforming a generation of power to make a difference!
